Tip: How to Steam Dumplings (or Anything) if You Don't Have a Bamboo Steamer

Updated: Aug 25

Here is a quick post with a tip I think I saw on YouTube, but I can't remember where. Haha! :) If you would like to steam dumplings or anything really and don't have a bamboo steamer, you can use some things you probably already have!

Supplies Needed:

- Pot of boiling water

- Colander

- Parchment paper

- Pan Lid that is big enough to cover the colander

You have to use a colander -- which has holes -- so that the steam can come up and cook your food.

The parchment paper is helpful for a couple of reasons:

- it is also has small holes in it, so it lets the steam / hot air through AND

- if any little pieces of the food fall off during cooking, then they are on the parchment paper and not the colander -- this is less mess for you and less cleaning of the colander!

All you need to do:

1.) Get a pot of boiling water going.

The amount of water in the post should not be too much and the amount of water should be just low enough that it doesn't touch the bottom of the colander when you put your colander over the pot.

2.) Put your colander in and put a piece of parchment paper over it.

3.) Put your dumplings / food in and then cover with a pan lid until cooked -- ~5 min. or so.

That's it! Give it a try! We are good at this!

These were dumplings I made with my recipe from my cookbook. I had frozen them and then when I wanted to eat them, then I just put them in the fridge the day before to thaw and then cooked them. In the book, I also mention how to fry them. Check it out!
