Samosa w/ Lime Cream Dipping Sauce (/ World Samosa Day)
Sept. 5 is World Samosa Day! Samosas are an Indian pastry that can be baked or fried and I think of them filled with spiced potatoes, but they can be filled with lots of different things. They are similar to empanadas.
"A samosa (/səˈmoʊsə/) is a fried or baked pastry with a savoury filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, cheese, beef and other meats, or lentils. It may take different forms, including triangular, cone, or half-moon shapes, depending on the region. The Indian style, often accompanied by a chutney, is probably the most widely known of a broad family of recipes from Africa to China, which have origins in medieval times or earlier. Samosas are a popular entrée, appetizer, or snack in the local cuisines of the Indian subcontinent, Western Asia, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa. Due to emigration and cultural diffusion from these areas, samosas today are often prepared in other regions."
Sept. 5 is also Cheese Pizza Day and Tailgating Day. I also featured Chicken & Waffle Bites!
Check out those posts.
Here are some posts about empanadas. I have made them from scratch, but usually I use Pillsbury pie crust for a quick hack. :) Oh and there's a Giant Empanada I made with Pillsbury pie crust. Haha! :)
Left: Baked Filipino Empanadas with empanada dough and Right: Giant Empanada (with Pillsbury pie crust)
What I used:
- Frozen samosas with potatoes and pea
- Daisy Sour cream (not shown)
- True Lime Powder packet (not shown) -- made from crystallized limes
I got some samosas from the freezer section at the grocery store. They are usually served with chutney, but I don't have that. I made a lime sour cream. Sour cream and potatoes go together. :)
I just baked them in my toaster oven. To make the sour cream, I just mixed the True Lime powder with some sour cream. Photo at the bottom.
Give it a try! We are good at this!
