This is my silver spin on the Scran Line's Bad Romance Cupcakes, which is fitting because I was working on some techniques in this cupcake to practice on making an Intergalactic Sculptural Hat Cake inspired by a sculptural hat I made for a Lady Gaga concert in 2010. Time flies! It's all meta- and refers to each other. Haha.
This was also the first time I tried to make 4-minute buttercream. Check out that post. This 1st attempt was not that successful (haha!), but I think I figured out why -- primarily because I didn't follow the instructions in the British Girl Bakes YouTube video.
The part I liked was the design with the shards of chocolate, which I thought would look good on my sculptural hat cake design.
I made mine silver and the cupcake silver and grey because my original hat was spray painted silver.
I melted down some white chocolate wafers and put them on a parchment paper tray with cooking spray on it. Then I put it in the fridge. I tried to paint the silver edible lustre dust mixed with some water on, but that didn't work too well.
I just painted on some some silver lustre dust alone (no water or liquid mix-in) onto the hardened chocolate & that worked better. I cut the chocolate into shards.
I wasn't able to get the nice even shapes like in the video, but the irregular shards kind of look nice. :) Then, I put the buttercream on the cupcake and added the shards...
We are good at this. I held back on a full ! because the buttercream is kind of messed up -- however from a visual perspective, it looks cool. I also think it's a success in terms of the design even though the shards are asymmetric. Because it's grey/silver and has the shards which look like horns; it reminded me of a rhino.
You could make this design any day and this also has a outer space or industrial feel because of the silver / grey color.
Give it a try! We are good at this!
