Onion Dip in a Potato Bowl w/ Homemade Potato Chips
Updated: Aug 27, 2020
Mar. 23 is Chip & Dip Day! This was inspired by YouTube videos I watch. It's fun & pretty easy to make.
I think it's so funny when food is also the serving dish or the bowl. Haha! :) One practical thing is that you have one less bowl to clean if you make your bowl out of food. Haha. :)
What is National Chip and Dip Day?
"National Chip and Dip Day celebrates America's favorite snack duet. If you re holding a party, it is almost certain that chips and dips are on the snack list. The only possible exclusion would be for an Ice Cream party.
Important Note: National Potato Chip Day is on March 14th. For today's celebration, the "chip" is more generic. It could be corn chips, or tortilla chips. And, the dip is any kind that goes well with the chip of choice.
Today is best celebrated in the evening with a bag of chips and your favorite dip.
Origin of "National Chip and Dip Day":
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. This day was most likely created by the snack food industry.
This is referred to as a "National" day. We did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day."
You can check out the Melting Tortilla Chip sculpture w/ Queso I made for Tortilla Chip Day and some other potato chip posts: Healthy Microwave Potato Chips and pretty Pressed Flower Potato Chips. They would also work if you are inspired for Chip & Dip day.
- Russet Potato
- Salt & pepper to taste
- Lemon juice (not sure if this needed)
I made my own onion dip using the ingredients below. Check out post for Onion Dip Wontons for another fun food with onion dip.
Easy Onion Dip
- 1/4 cup of onions (sauteed or caramelized) or onion powder
- 2 tablespoons of Daisy sour cream
- 2 tablespoons of Philadelphia cream cheese
- salt & pepper
I just microwaved all this & mixed it together.
I preheat oven to 400 degrees.
I just used my mandoline to make thin potato slices for about 1/2 the potato. That makes a bunch of chips as you can see. I soaked them in some water with lemon juice to get some starch out. Then, I baked the chips for 5-7 min. or until golden brown.
For the other 2/3 or 1/2 of the potato, I microwaved it for 5 min. or so until it was soft. Then I scooped out the middle to make a bowl. :)
Putting it all together
I just added the onion dip to the "bowl" and started eating! :) As I mentioned above, you can use pre-made onion dip if you would like.
Give it a try! We are good at this!
