Modifying Recipes to Get Same Flavor Combos and Make it Easier & Faster (Bacon, Onion, Pesto Pizza)

This is an example of how you can modify a recipe with what you have to get similar flavor combinations -- and make it faster & easier for you!


I used this recipe from Alex Guarnaschelli on the Food Network for inspiration: Flatbread with Bacon and Scallion Pesto. I wouldn't have thought to put these ingredients together on a pizza; it looked really good!


In the recipe (which looks delicious), you make your own scallion pesto and you use lemon zest, use pizza dough and creme fraiche (or sour cream).

I had a lot of the ingredients -- some cooked onions, bacon, sour cream in my fridge. But I made some substitutions to make it faster and easier.


Substitutions:

1.) Instead of making my own pesto, I had pre-made Cibo Naturals pesto in a container.

2.) Instead of using pizza dough, I had some Stonefire Artisan pre-made pizza crust.

-- I have made pizza dough from scratch which was fun (see link), but not something I felt like doing.

3.) Instead of zesting a lemon, I just squirted some lemon juice for the brightness that lemon zest adds.



I assembled my pizza in 1 minute or so and put it in the 425 degree oven for 6-7 minutes. Yum! As I mentioned above, I wouldn't have thought to put these ingredients together on a pizza -- it was really good! In particular, adding sour cream or creme fraiche on the pizza was good and something I hadn't tried before.


Tip: So when you are looking at recipes, if you don't have all the ingredients, think about what's in your fridge that could be a good substitute. :)
