Lion Pizza with Parmesan Crisp Mane / Lion Day

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

This is something I came up with inspired by Lion Day. It takes 2 simple things: a pizza and parmesan chip and puts them together to make a cute lion! :) This works for Lion Day or any day! If you are making them for a party, you could make a bunch of parmesan crisp manes even a day or 2 before and then bake a bunch of pizza faces all together. :)

Lion Day

Lion Day aims to raise awareness of the majestic hunter, the ultimate feline, the king of the jungle, the big fluffy kitty of the Serengeti… Hmm, we should have left it at ‘king of the jungle’?

Basically, it’s all about lions, but you’ve probably got that from the name.

History of World Lion Day

This celebration of the animal kingdom’s most beautiful and fearsome creature was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to big cats. August 10th is a day for people to come together from across the world to pay tribute to the mighty lion in as many ways as possible. Though a fun and exciting occasion for all, its foundations are based in a very serious matter: lion numbers have dramatically declined to the point where the species needs to be placed on the endangered list, just like its larger cousin the tiger.

World Lion Day is the brainchild of co-founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team with a passion for big cats. They began the initiative in 2013, bringing together both National Geographic and the Big Cat Initiative under a single banner to protect the remaining big cats living in the wild.

What I used:

- Pillsbury pizza dough

- Pesto

(You could use tomato sauce or whatever you like)

- Mozzarella string cheese

-- Note: A lot of times I just use string cheese just for mozzarella as shredded cheese (see posts) and it doesn't have to be in string cheese form, but here you need string cheese because you form the eyes and nose from the round shape of string cheese.

- Shredded parmesan cheese (lion mane)

- Parchment paper

- Black edible marker

- 2 baking sheets (one for pizza and one for lion mane)

Outside of this lion mane :), there a lot of things you can do with parmesan crisps that you wouldn't expect.

-- It's fun, tasty, low-carb and has protein.

-- Also, it's a good way to use cheese that you think might be going bad. Check it out!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Cut 3 slices from the string cheese (2 for eyes and 1 for nose). Use the edible marker to color the nose black and form eyes.

I used shredded parmesan to form a ring or lion mane :) on one of the baking sheets. I made sure the ring was smaller than the plate I was going to display it on.

Note: You have to put the mane on a different sheet than the face (pizza). You can't bake them together on the same sheet.

- You take out the Parmesan crisp mane after about 5-7 min.

- The pizza may take 10-15 min. depending on how big it is.

I also put the pizza on HI broil for a few min to get some browning of the cheese.

Then I just made a little pizza for the head with pesto and cheese.

Cut the slices for eyes and nose before you shred the string cheese for the little pizza or you can use shredded cheese or even a different type of cheese. The mozzarella string cheese which is white works well for eyes.

Then I put it all together! That's it! Give it a try! We are good at this!
