Lazy Person's Tips for a "Real" Grilled Cheese

It involves something that does not seem like a lazy person thing to do -- using the stove -- but only for 30 sec.-1 min. :) It's really easy and you get the nice crunchy toasty outside on the grilled cheese. It is way better than just using the microwave or toaster to make a grilled cheese. You do use the microwave here too. :) All in all, the entire prep and cook time takes 2-3 minutes tops.

Ingredients:

- Bread

- Butter (just 1/2 pat or a pat in little chunks) for the crunchy toasty outside

- Cheese - a melt-y one

(Kraft American Cheese is classic, Cheddar or this is mozzarella string cheese of course. I use it as an ingredient a lot and wrote a post about this. :) )

- Optional: Anything else you want to add -- ham, turkey, spinach, etc.

Supplies: plate and non-stick pan; microwave, stove

Total prep & cook time: 2-3 minutes.

I wrote this as Steps / Instructions below the final picture.

First, I put the non-stick pan (no oil or butter) on the stove and put it on medium. It seems like using a pan or the stove is not a lazy person thing to do, but it's really easy and you get the nice crunchy toasty outside on the grilled cheese. It is way better than just using the microwave or toaster to make a grilled cheese.

Here I only felt like having half a sandwich or only 1 piece of bread.

I put the string cheese on half of the bread and folded it in half.

I microwave it for 20-30 seconds to pre-melt the cheese.

I put 2 or 3 little chunks of cold butter (see the sort of blurry half picture I took on the right :) ) on 1 side of the bread.

Then, I put the buttered side down in the pan.

I do find that putting cold chunks of butter works better.

When I have tried to put melted butter on the bread, it toasts too fast and gets burned.

While the bread is in the pan toasting the first side (~15-30 seconds, watch it!), I put 2 or 3 little chunks of cold butter on the top (side that has not been toasted yet).

Some people say mayo gives the best crust for grilled cheese, but I never have mayo around, so I haven't tried this.

It toasts fast! After 15-30 seconds, flip it and wait another 15-30 seconds and you're done.

This is similar to what I wrote when I wrote about toasting the bun and making an easy cheeseburger on the stove.
