Experiment / Tip: Speed up Empanadas w/ Pre-Made Pie Crust or Pizza Dough?

One of my favorite Filipino foods and fav things to do with rotisserie chicken is to make empanadas! Filipino chicken empanadas have a filling with chicken, potatoes, and raisins (unexpected, right? :) ) One tip/hack I wrote about is that I like to use is to use rotisserie chicken, which is already cooked & then shred it to make the filling. I have made them from scratch and they turned out well! Check out those posts!

Empanada dough can take awhile to make. For another tip/hack to make things faster, I decided to experiment with pre-made dough.


I decided to test pre-made pie crust and pizza dough and see which one tasted most similar to empanada dough.


I actually did 2 experiments:

1.) Pie Crust vs. Pizza Crust

2.) Egg wash or no egg wash (on pie crust vs. pizza dough)


I made a quick shredded rotisserie chicken filling with potatoes and raisins etc. that I wrote about before and then I made some empanadas on pie crust and pizza dough.

Here they are on the baking sheet:


Front row: pie crust (no egg wash) and pizza dough (egg wash on center one and no egg wash on the one on the right)

Back row: pie crust w/ egg wash on the first 2 on the left; no egg wash on the third.




Below is after baking at 400 degrees for 15-18 min.


RESULT: Pie crust looks and tastes most like original empanada dough (vs. pizza crust). Egg wash looks better, but the all taste good.


If you want some quick empanadas, try pre-made pie crust.
