Dessert “Chicken Pot Pie”
This is a "chicken pot pie" that is a dessert! I can't find my notes or the videos I used as an inspiration, but I'm pretty sure it was from a Tastemade YouTube compilation video. I thought it was so funny -- a dessert that looks like a savory food! I think it's a trompe l'oeil -- though that is a term that is typically used to describe a painting that deceives the eye. For example, a painting that is painted to look like a 3-D object. This dessert deceives you into thinking it's a savory food. Haha. :)
First, I made lemon curd to fill the chicken pot pie. I used a different Tastemade YouTube video for that, but I can't find that one either. Haha. :) And I can't find my notes.
I was making a small batch. This is what I think I in a pan on low on the stove.
- 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 whole egg, 2 tablespoons of water, 2 tablespoons of butter, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, 1/4 cup of lemon juice.
I put it on low because I didn't want to cook the egg.
- Lemon Curd (play around with recipe above; may need to change the ratios to get desired consistency or use a different recipe)
- Starburst (orange - "carrots"; yellow - "chicken")
- Green Sour Mike & Ikes ("peas)
- Pillsbury Pie Crust
I made the chicken & veggies by cutting pieces of Starburst cut to look like carrots (orange) or chicken (yellow). The "peas" are made from Sour Mike and Ikes, which I cut into pea-sized. :)
I put it all in a ramekin. I put a little pre-made pie crust with some egg wash on top and baked it at 400 degrees for 12-15 min. just to brown the crust. Everything else was edible. :)
RESULT: Success! :)
We are good at this! It really looks like chicken pot pie! :) Haha! It's was really fun to make & pretty easy. It was good to learn about how to make lemon curd too, which I can use for different recipes.
Because I was making the dessert "chicken pot pie," I decided to make a real chicken pot pie. It was really a fast way to get a hearty meal even with some veggies. Check out that post: "Quick Salad Bar Chicken Pot Pie."
Give it a try! We are good at this! :)
