Cricket (Bugs!) Cookies!

Updated: Jan 18, 2020

The reasoning behind why I decided to make cricket (bugs!) cookies is a little tangential, haha! :) When I learned about "Make Your Dreams Come True" Day & thinking about what project to do, I thought of Pinocchio and the song "When You Wish Upon a Star." Then I thought of Jiminy Cricket and somewhat morbidly (haha!) I thought, "Oh, I can try out those cricket flour cookies." (See info about ""Make Your Dreams Come True" Day at the bottom of the post.)

I had first seen them on Shark Tank a few years back. It didn't really gross me out. It looked like flour. However, before trying it out, when I was FaceTiming with my bro & baby niece, I felt some crunchy things in there, I did think they were big cricket body parts. Haha! And I became a little leery. However, I was relieve to find out that they were the chocolate chips!

Attempt #1:

Making the cricket cookie mix is the same as any cookie mix; you just add 3 other things. For a whole batch, you just add butter (not as much as in the picture), an egg and some vanilla, which I didn't have. I just made 1/2 batch.

Ingredients for 1/2 batch:

- Chirps chocolate chip cookie mix (1/2 bag)

- 1/2 Egg

- 3 tablespoons of butter

- vanilla (which I didn't have)

I mixed the cookie mix with 1/2 egg, then I added melted butter. On the package, it says to use melted butter.

Then you just put it in the fridge for 2 hours to chill; similar to other cookie doughs.

After 2 hours, I took them out of the fridge & I put the cookie dough on a baking sheet with parchment paper & cooking spray. I baked them at 350 degrees for ~15 minutes.

RESULT: Success! :)

We are good at this! The cookies look pretty much the same as regular cookie dough. And they taste good! You wouldn't have been able to tell these were made with cricket flour unless I told you. They maybe have a slight oatmeal cookie taste to them, but they were pretty much the same as normal chocolate chip cookies.

Cricket flour is high protein -- 2 cookies has 5 grams of protein (10% of daily recommended value). According to the package, cricket protein has: "more B12 than salmon, more iron than spinach, and all 9 essential amino acids". Haha, so eating chocolate chip cookies is like eating a health food.

I recommend you try it out yourself. I'll definitely bake these cookies again & try other cricket flour products.

Give it a try! We are good at this!
