Can I Make a Whimsical Mushroom Garden Rigatoni?

I saw this whimsical mushroom garden made with rigatoni on a Tastemade YouTube video and it looked like something out of a fairy tale, like David the Gnome (a cartoon from when I was little) would be hiding in there (haha :) ), so I wanted to try to make an easy fast and mini-version. Also it was an interesting plating design to see the rigatoni upright, so it seemed fun.







November 18, 2019, Attempt #1:


Basically, the video is a fun whimsical plating of rigatoni with Alfredo sauce with mixed mushrooms. Then you put it in the oven with some cheese on top, so it gets nice & melty & crusty.



I got these assorted mixed mushrooms with different shapes from the store. In the video, they make their own Alfredo sauce with butter, heavy cream, garlic etc. I didn't feel like doing this; I just got this Newman's Own Alfredo sauce, which only has 80 calories per 1/4 cup. Bonus: 100% goes to charity.


They use a small cast iron pan; I don't have one. I just used my little 4" springboard pan. I used mozzarella string cheese and parmesan I had around.




I boiled the rigatoni. I put a little of the Alfredo sauce in the bottom of the springboard pan. Then I put all the rigatoni into the springboard pan standing upright. I added the different shapes of mushrooms in a random pattern.


On top, I added some cheese and a little more Alfredo sauce on top. I also added some Italian breadcrumbs for a little extra crunch.


I put it in the oven at 350 degrees for 20 or 25 min. as noted in the video. I also actually broiled it for a few minutes, so it would get nice & brown on top.



RESULT: Success! :)


We are good at this! How pretty and whimsical does that look? Tell me you wouldn't pay $15 or $20 for this in a restaurant. Haha. :)


It's another fun little art project that you can also eat. :) It tastes good too.

Monday, December, 9, 2019, Attempt #2:


I decided to have the mushroom and rigatoni again and at the suggestion of one of the comments, I left off the cheese when I put it in the oven, so that the whimsical plating would be more visible after it came out of the oven.


They didn't have the variety pack when I went to the store. I bought some oyster mushrooms, which came in a ?bunch. I'm not sure what the term for it is.





There were lots of different sizes of mushrooms, which I inserted into the upright rigatoni in a random way.











RESULT: Success! :)


We are good at this! The whimsical plating of the mushroom garden is more visible in the rigatoni -- without the cheese and breading and slightly more healthy.


It's a fun way to cook and eat rigatoni with mushroom. It looks so fancy!
