Can I Make a "Moon Rock Cake"?
I saw this "Moon Rock" Cake on the Scran Line's YouTube channel & it looked so cool that I had to try it. :)
I was most interested in the decorating part & making the "Moon Rocks" which are cake pop mixture sculpted into rocks. Super cool looking! :) Something I like about his cake designs is that a lot of times the cake batter is colored different colors and part of the design -- so the inside & the outside of the cake is a full art piece. Similarly, I made my cake batter 2 different colors here.
What I used:
- Funfetti cake mix
- Purple and Green food coloring (cake batters)
- Black food coloring (for "Moon Rocks" & to make grey frosting on the outside)
- Extra chocolate cake (for "Moon Rocks")
I had put half of the batter in this big measuring cup & then added green food coloring to it. I put the purple batter into a Ziploc bag before putting it in the cake pan because I didn't think I could get a design consistently pouring it from the bowl. I snipped the corner of the Ziplock bag & piped the purple batter.
I alternated adding the purple and green batter to the cake pan. Even the cake batter is art! :) I baked the cake at 350 degrees as on the box.
While the cake was in the oven, I made the "Moon Rocks". I took some extra chocolate cake I had around & added frosting & black food coloring to make a cake pop mixture, which I sculpted into irregularly-shaped "Moon Rocks".
I used a lollipop stick to poke different holes in them to make them look more like asteroids. He used a fondant tool in the video. I sprayed them edible silver glitter for some sparkle and more outer space look. I think they look super cool!
Once the cake was done, I added a little bit of black food coloring to white frosting to make a dark grey color. I frosted the cake and put the "Moon Rocks" on top.
RESULT: Success! :)
We are good at this! I was very happy with my "Moon Rocks" which look like rocks & don't even look like food. The cake does not look as good as his (haha! :) ), but it was really fun to make & I think it turned out pretty well.
You can sort of see the green & purple cake on the inside in the photo. :)
Give it a try! We are good at this!
