Can I Do Cake Piping?

Updated: Aug 28

For the Dinosaur Abduction UFO Cake was the first cake that I tried out cake piping with tips. For other things, I have just used a Ziploc bag and cut off the end, but this was the first time I tried out using tips.

Cake piping sets, at least the basic ones are pretty cheap actually.

Attempt #1:

First, I didn't read any instructions or watch any YouTube videos. They make it look so easy on the Food Network and the YouTube videos. I thought -- this must be easy.

I made the 1 buttercream recipe I know how to make (stay tuned for that post!)

I put some buttercream frosting in a plastic bag and then I put it in the blue cake piping bag. I just put a metal tip on and tried to pipe on to the cake above.

RESULT: Fail!

We are good at this? Disaster! The metal tip fell off. Haha! :)

So I watched a YouTube video...

Attempt #2:

I watched this short video from King Arthur. It was really helpful. I'll probably refer to it again. I realized there was this plastic part in the box that I wasn't using correctly, haha! I reassembled things and tried again...

RESULT: Success! :)

We are good at this! The piping tip stayed on and I think the green grassy patch turned out well! It was good that the first cake piping that I tried was not too precise of a design. :)

Check out the other posts for how to make the LED Lights Cake Stand & the full Dinosaur Abduction UFO Cake!

Give it a try! We are good at this!
