Bacterial Smear Cookies for World Laboratory Day!
Updated: Aug 27, 2020
I saw these cookies on Pinterest and the really looked like a real bacterial smear! They were so cute that I had to make them for World Laboratory Day! Compare with a real pic from the CDC (via Unsplash.com and also one from the CDC on rawpixel.com)! This is how people test if a patient has an infection and also how they perform experiments. You use different media and agar (chemicals) depending on what kind of smear and what kind of bacteria you are trying to grow, so that's why it's a different color.
World Laboratory Day
"World Laboratory Day celebrates the place where great discoveries, inventions, and medical cures are made. Its also where mad scientists dwell. Perhaps the most well known thing to come out of laboratory was...Frankenstein!
Countless ideas, concepts and theories are tested in laboratories. Most of the world's greatest medical treatments and cures were discovered and perfected in laboratories, after endless study and testing. Products coming out of laboratories have helped and aided mankind in many, many ways.
Celebrate World Laboratory Day by learning more about how they work. If you chance across a laboratory worker (or mad scientist) today, wish them a Happy World Laboratory Day.
Origin of "World Laboratory Day":
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day."
Here is some information on how people prepare bacterial smear:
The cookies were made with the cookie recipe and non-royal icing Icing I have used before.
The little nonpareil sprinkles are the little bacteria that are growing. Gross, but cute!
They are just tasty cookies with sprinkles, but you can learn something too. :)
Give it a try! We are good at this!
